The Pi Foundation Celebrates 5 Years With a New Pi Zero W

As the Raspberry Pi found itself celebrating its 5th birthday, it’s so hard to believe the mini motherboards have only been around for that long. In that amount of time, we have seen the Pi Foundation come up with ample technological advancements for its Pi, altering its capabilities, and most definitely seeing the Pi world through the eyes of countless makers and DIY-ers, who have repurposed these mini-computers into clever inventions. Since the first $35 computer launch in 2012, the Pi Foundation has only continued to add more and more members to its family of low-cost computers. In honoring the occasion of five years running as the world’s most famous tiny board computer, the Foundation announced its Raspberry Pi Zero W – “W” standing for what is new, wireless connectivity.

Endless opportunities continue to arise from these mini computers, and now one incredibly helpful upgrade should make Pi tinkerers everywhere happier. Always a fantastic start to a full-set computer in the making, the new Pi should make an even greater general-purpose computer- since from the start, it won’t need a hub. We all loved the amazing $5 2015 Pi Zero (the cheapest Pi family member to date) and the cool inventions associated with it (tiny arcade machines, electric skateboards, etc), but because the Pi Zero board wasn’t wireless, projects ended up costing a bit more than the Zero itself (since adding a dongle became a requirement).

Other than the very exciting new addition of Wi-Fi, specs remain exactly the same as the Pi Zero, like the 1GHz single-core Broadcom BCM2835 CPU, the 512 MB of RAM, and 40-pin header. Nestling between the original Pi and its flagship 64-bit/ Wi-Fi enabled Pi 3 from last year, any project ideas you had in mind previously, go ahead and bring back with your new Pi. Bring them to life with the additional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth of the Pi Zero W, which will eliminate the worry of having a low-cost idea stay low-cost. Not surprisingly, the price tag of a Wi-Fi Pi is still really affordable. Just $5 more than its predecessor, or $10, you can have your own fun creating a ton of value out of a little money. One great thing about Raspberry Pis of all models is that there’s something out there for everyone.

Technology seems to advance at a mind-boggling speed these days. It seems just minutes after I upgrade to the latest smartphone, a better, faster model has already hit the market. By the time I learn all the shortcuts and hot buttons to my new laptop, it’s nearly obsolete. Yet in the last 50 or so years, very little has happened to advance battery technology. The standard lithium-ion battery is used in everything from tablets to electric cars to kids’ toys. Given how volatile they still are (as we all learned from the great exploding Samsung Galaxy Note fiasco of 2016), you’d think that someone would have found a viable alternative by now. And even if spontaneous combustion doesn’t happen to deter you, what about the fact that battery life is one of the most widely-expressed consumer complaints when it comes to mobile devices? I feel utterly naked if I leave the house without my smartphone; and Nomophobia, the fear of having your phone die or lose service, is now a very real thing (I’m not kidding – look it up). So, Science, I ask you – what are you doing to save my (gadget’s) life?

John Goodenough, a professor at the University of Texas, is widely credited as the inventor of the lithium-ion battery. Oddly enough, he may now also be the man responsible for its replacement – a whopping 37 years later, at just 94 years young. In the nearly four decades that have passed since the battery’s inception, he has never stopped working to make it better. Despite its widespread popularity and use, he still never felt it was “good enough. So along with Maria Helena Braga, senior research fellow at the Cockrell School, and their team, a low-cost solid state battery eventually came to fruition; one which was far safer than its lithium-ion predecessor. Not only is the new battery technology cheaper to make and safer to use, but it also stores thrice as much energy and takes mere minutes to charge, rather than several hours. Plus, it’s equipped to sustain a far greater number of charge and discharge cycles than the typical lithium-ion battery.

So what is it? Well to start, the new battery uses glass electrolytes instead of liquid. This is the key to its incombustibility – whereas liquid lithium-ion batteries can form dendrites (whisker-like strands of metal that can cause the short-circuiting and explosions that products from Apple and Samsung were recently plagued with), glass electrolytes will not. Additionally, the all-solid-state battery uses an alkali-metal anode, which increases energy density. This results in more charge cycles, longer battery life, and much faster charging periods. Plus, the new technology could actually open some new doors for scientists and researchers in some of the world’s Arctic regions, since it is able to function in sub-zero temperatures. And to top all that off, it’s even good for the environment. Since the lithium is replaced with sodium as a key material, one of its main components can essentially be harvested from seawater. This, in turn, helps further drive the cost down.

Only time will tell if the idea is deemed to be both practical and scalable. When the lithium-ion battery was first invented, it took nearly a decade to enter the mass production phase of its life cycle. But at least there is hope on the horizon for a better-powered future, as Goodenough and his team work with battery makers to test the invention in real-world devices.

First thing’s first, one of the many important things you look for in your everyday devices, a.k.a. your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, is of course how much space you have on them. Especially with the way we take photos and video these days, we rely on our mobiles to store countless documents for work, it’s nice to have that extra space. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I don’t want to fully rely on cloud storage. It’s a great thing to have, but something about having the data on my actual device ensures some added security for me. Of course there are folks that may not only agree with that notion, but have so much data they are carrying around, they want even more space than ever, and they want to do that without being forced to use the cloud or extra hard drives.

The solutions for this problem most definitely hit a new high with Kingston’s DataTraveler Ultimate GT (GT standing for Generation Terabyte), first unveiled at CES at the beginning of 2017. As the world’s highest capacity USB flash drive, in either 1TB or 2TB options, the DataTraveler Ultimate flash drives hit the streets in the last week of February, then immediately sold out.

The plus-sized devices are incredibly expensive, but that didn’t stop those who really needed them, or have been waiting for something so high capacity to meet their needs. Whatever the reason, these, sold on Amazon since their release date, were offered for $1,319 for the 1TB model, and $2,273 for the 2TB model. Yes, this is expensive, but when considering Kingston’s 1TB HyperX Predator USB 3.0 flash drive from 2013 sold for $2,730, there’s reason these drives may be worth it, especially when considering specs.

For example. The 2TB DataTraveler Ultimate USB 3.1 device has read and write speeds of 300MB/s and 200MB/s, respectively. They also have the ability to store up to 70 hours of 4K footage onto a device measuring 2.96 x 1.06 x .83 inches, weighing 4.8 ounces (not as discrete as some, but hey, it’s carrying a ton of storage capability in there), and made of zinc-alloy. To disclose the strides made in this form of data storage, words from the Kingston company say it best. By always striving to create new and better solutions for storage, the company can meet customer’s needs in a way that matches how quickly the digital world is growing. With these particular drives, users can push the boundaries of their current devices’ capacities, and confide in much higher levels of storage, stockpiling anything from video, photos, and countless work or personal files.

To there you have it, the newest member of Kingston’s DataTraveler Ultimate GT flash drive family was immediately fallen for the moment it hit the market. These pocket-sized, simple yet premium looking little money-makers are still making waves as the world’s largest capacity USB flash, and should be back to shipping ASAP. Now, in the real world, these are more of a novelty item than anything, so that whole running-out-immediately-thing, well, perhaps it meant the supply was more competitive than we know. Plus, not the typical Joe can swap over two grand for a flash drive. What do I know? We’ll leave these for the pros until, like most everything in tech, the price naturally falls over time.
